Constantin von Seld, Senior film & tv editor

{ About Me}

Born in 1975 in Hamburg, Germany, and raised in the south of France, I started my career in 1995 as a runner and video assist operator on James Bond: GoldenEye. That experience set the bar high in terms of the scale and ambition of film projects.
Since then, I’ve amassed over 25 years of professional experience as a film editor.

After gaining insight into editing while working at a post-production company in London, I became an in-house editor at the commercial film production company PetersenNaumann in Hamburg in 1997. In 2000, I transitioned to freelance work and have since focused primarily on editing feature films and television, with a strong emphasis on storytelling across a variety of genres, including comedy, crime, action, and drama.

In addition to editing, I am passionate about a wide range of creative pursuits, including music, photography, and writing.

{ My editing philosophy}
A great edit is one you don’t notice because you are fully immersed in the story—one with the experience.

As an editor, everything that has been achieved by all departments—everyone’s hard work, including the actors' precious performances—lands in my hands. I consider it my sacred duty to honor these combined efforts, ensuring the film works, aligns with the director’s vision, and tells the story in the best possible way.
If it’s a comedy, the timing must be sharp, the tempo solid, and the wit on point. In drama, the goal is to deeply engage the viewer, helping them connect emotionally with the protagonist and accompany them on their emotional journey. In crime or thriller genres, suspense is paramount—challenging the viewer’s intellect while keeping them on the edge of their seat, revealing just enough to intrigue without giving too much away.

I can only work with the material I’m given, but I feel fortunate to have collaborated with so many talented people that this is rarely an issue. When challenges do arise, I embrace them and strive to find the best solution.

With over 25 years of experience, I’ve become highly resourceful in identifying what works, what doesn’t, and why.
Throughout the editing process, I always pay close attention to the film’s pace. I believe it’s crucial never to lose the viewer’s interest—every scene should maintain some form of tension, even the quieter ones. I’ve worked on films where no music was used at all, relying solely on the rhythm of dialogue and sound before the composer added their score. That said, I often use temp music as a tool to enhance the experience, whenever it feels right for the scene.

I take special care with the actors’ performances—they are the heart of the story. It’s my job to shape and balance how their characters are perceived, bringing them to life and ensuring they shine on screen. My goal is always to piece everything together until the scene feels complete. Some moments in an actor’s performance are iconic, when all the elements—image, dialogue, and delivery—align with precision and passion. These are the moments I cherish and craft into the final cut to help create unforgettable films.
